The National Water Helpline 1916 is the central government complaint line for water supply problems in India, operated by the Ministry of Jal Shakti under the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation. It accepts complaints from both urban and rural areas across all states.
To file a complaint, call 1916 which is toll-free and available 24 hours. Describe the nature of the problem — no water supply, low pressure, contaminated or discoloured water, broken pipeline, delayed or absent water tanker. Give your full address including the ward number and locality. The helpline logs your complaint and routes it to the relevant local authority such as the municipal corporation, panchayat water committee or state jal board. Note the complaint reference number.
Resolution timelines vary by state and the type of issue. For faster results, contact your local municipal corporation or state jal board directly in parallel with calling 1916.
If local bodies do not resolve the issue, file a formal grievance on pgportal.gov.in under CPGRAMS and select the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Alternatively, approach your district consumer forum through edaakhil.nic.in.
